The Case for Vintage
There's a moment in almost every project where it seems easier to just start fresh and buy new. We understand the appeal. New feels easy, fast, finished. But it's rarely what makes a house feel like a home. At Studio Cole, we believe a room without at least one vintage or inherited piece is a room that hasn't lived yet.
Why We Reach for the Old First
A brand-new sofa, a brand-new rug, a brand-new coffee table — furnished this way, a space can look beautiful in photos and still feel a little hollow in person. Vintage pieces carry patina, imperfection, and history, and those things do something new furniture simply can't: they make a room feel like it was collected over time rather than purchased in a weekend.
This is the layering we talk about so often. Just like we build a room with ambient, task, and accent lighting, we build a room with new, vintage, and inherited pieces. Each layer earns its place.
It Doesn't Have to Be a Family Heirloom
You don't need a grandmother's armoire to bring in that sense of history (though if you have one, we will absolutely find a spot for it!). A weathered brass floor lamp from a local antique market, a hand-thrown ceramic vase with a small chip, a set of dining chairs with worn cane seats — these are the details that catch the eye and hold the story of a room.

The Balance
The goal is never an entirely vintage room either — that can feel more like a museum than a place to live. It's the mix that matters. New pieces bring comfort and function. Vintage pieces bring soul. Together, they create something that feels timeless, rooted, and entirely your own.
